So your company has decided to take the plunge and move to cloud computing–are you wondering how to protect your company and its data if things don’t work out? It’s a normal concern, but the fact is, cloud providers often provide better security, better data protection and more uptime than their enterprise counterparts. Nevertheless, it is possible that someday you may need to change cloud providers, so here are a few points to keep in mind.

  • Choose providers carefully. While it’s nice to have the ability to customize everything, try to choose a cloud provider whose standard offerings most closely match your needs. Minimizing customization makes for smoother integration and greater portability.
  • Consider a hybrid plan. Such an approach allows you to fully customize data and applications in house, while taking full advantage of the power of cloud computing for your more universal needs.
  • If your cloud provider does not include a contract termination migration clause, try to negotiate one. That way you’ll know what you can expect and what to plan for.

No company wants to regularly move data and applications, but in today’s business environment, it does pay to plan for change.
